Our nation is failing young children

All children have the right to develop to their full potential, to receive proper care, to be safe and happy and to learn. Research shows that 78% of our children under 4 do not have access to formal early childhood development programmes. Of these 66% are poor and thus likely to not be receiving adequate stimulation, feeding and care. By the time children reach school, critical opportunities for brain development may already have passed. Physical and emotional nurturing of babies helps their ability to develop and learn. Given the high incidence of maternal depression, domestic violence and teenage pregnancy in many communities, there needs to be far greater investment in ensuring that relevant services work together.

ECD remains vulnerable to provincial budgets and to the lack of budgetary commitment in the local Integrated Development Plans. Departments lack adequate funds and capacity to provide in terms of both quantity and quality.

... through informed, targeted and increased investment in early childhood development as a moral obligation to our youngest, most vulnerable citizens. These little people are at the right stage to develop great learning capacity. They are the key to a better South Africa for all.
