Families Poster
Hand-coloured sepia photographs of sixteen widely differing South African families provide a child with choices with which she/he can identify.
There is a space in the middle for a photograph or drawing of the child's own family. In the classroom situation the teacher might choose to give each pupil a chance to introduce her/his family by rotating the use of the central space on the poster, or even insert a single photograph of the whole class to serve as the focal point.
The word families appear in all our official languages. The poster comes with an informative sheet.

Snap
Thirty-six children reflecting a wide diversity of South African society make up the game. Each child was photographed wearing one of nine different hats. Snap! is called out when two cards match, not because they are identical but because there is a match between two different children who are wearing the same hat.

Happy Families
For this game we photographed 9 South African families and used their real names. Some families are small, some are large, there are single parent households and families where grandparents are an integral part of the family.
The game challenges bias by presenting varied images of family life and encourages curiosity and discussion amongst children in order to help them accept a more fluid and inclusive definition of what makes up a family.

We All Count!
The aim of We All Count! is to give numeracy learning in the Foundation Phase a human rights slant and to break the artificial barrier between mathematics and real life. The activity set provides opportunites for reading, writing and discussion on a wide range of issues as well as crucial practice in ordering, counting, comparing, sorting, classifying and other number-based operations.
Although the suggestions in this booklet emphasise numeracy, the poster and cards are well suited to the integration of lifeskills and literacy in the curriculum.
The separate parts of We All Count! can be used on their own or in a number of combinations with small or large groups of children for different types of experiences ranging from formal teaching to playing games. The suggested activities for each age group include an increase in number range and level of difficulty. By simplifying certain of the activities, it could also be adapted for use with younger children.
As many of the ideas build on one another, it is necessary for teachers and parents to read the suggestions for the lower levels and higher levels in order to fully understand instructions. Adapting ideas upwards and downwards to suit individual children or your particular group of children is important.
