“Am I a Lion that Eats People?” is the third in ELRU’s Miele series of picture books whose aim is it to support children in deepening their understanding of a human rights. It is the thorny topic of the unjust discrimination shown towards people who are HIV positive or have AIDS that is tackled in this book. The main characters in the story, Mawabo and his mother, both HIV positive, talk about their feelings, frustrations, hopes and fears. The image of a lion frightening yet brave becomes a symbol for both the fear that AIDS engenders and the bravery of those living with HIV.
